Visit one of the oldest cathedrals in Northern Europe to see a fascinating collection of medieval art and admire the church’s stunning architecture.

Aachen Cathedral is a beautiful Roman Catholic church in the historic town of Aachen. The cathedral has been the coronation church of many German kings and queens. Take a guided tour of Aachen Cathedral to see bronze sculptures, magnificent gold artworks and exceptional architecture. The church is also near other historic sites in Aachen, including an imposing Gothic-Baroque town hall.

Notice the beautiful striped arches, grand columns and octagonal dome. The cathedral is a terrific example of Carolingian architecture and was based on Byzantine palace churches. The church dates to the late 8th century and was built for Charlemagne, the first Holy Roman Emperor.

Walk through the interior of Aachen Cathedral to see the handsomely decorated columns. Charlemagne shipped about 32 of the columns from Rome and Ravenna. Some were looted during the French Revolution however, over 20 have been returned and restored.

Marienschrein (Shrine of the Virgin Mary) was donated to Aachen Cathedral in the 13th century. It is a masterpiece of goldsmith art, reflecting the transitional period between the Romanesque and Gothic eras. It is adorned with depictions of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, Pope Leo III, Charlemagne and the Twelve Apostles.

Look for the glorious artwork resting on the choir in the cathedral.

A beautiful wheel chandelier hanging from the vault in Aachen Cathedral is more than 13 feet (4 meters) in diameter. Observe the many candles, lit only on special holy days. Other impressive objects in Aachen Cathedral include an 11th-century golden altar frontal and an exquisite marble throne from Carolingian times.

The UNESCO Heritage Site is located in Aachen, in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Aachen Cathedral is open daily however, visiting is not permitted during special events and services.

Stop at Aachen Cathedral to see stunning gold artworks and learn about one of the most historically significant churches in Northern Europe.
