Pathways Holiday Cottage a delightful 18th century stone cottage in Derbyshire.

Pathways Holiday Cottage is in a perfect location for exploring the historic buildings, pretty villages and the beautiful scenery of Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire on the edge of the Peak District national park.

This charming stone-built cottage dates back to 1703 and has retained many of the original features throughout. Beautifully decorated, Pathways Cottage is a real gem in the wonderful village location of Old Higham in Derbyshire. Offering a cosy living room with two wood burning stoves, a large kitchen/dining room with crackling wood burner and a wonderful range to cook on, through to a conservatory to relax in whilst looking out onto the cottage garden. Upstairs you will find two bedrooms and a beautiful bathroom with a shower and the all-important slipper foot bath to soak away your troubles.

Walkers will find many routes directly from the doorstep offering you the chance to explore this fantastic area. Close by you will find Hardwick Hall, built in the 1590s by ’Bess of Hardwick’ the second most powerful woman in England after Queen Elizabeth I. The jaw dropping hall is now open to the public through the National Trust and has a visitor centre with shop and coffee shop. Whilst visiting Hardwick Hall why not visit the estates original watermill, still in operation and open to the public, then enjoy lunch at the Hardwick Inn dating back to the 16th century. A short drive away you will find the delights of the Peak District, including Chatsworth House, the town of Matlock and Matlock Bath famous for its illuminations and Heights of Abraham cable car. For a nostalgic journey back in time hop onto one of the Peak Steam engines or journey back in time on one of the historic narrow boats on the Cromford Canal.

The towns of Chesterfield and Derby are just a 20-minute drive away, and nearby Nottinghamshire is also just 20 minutes away, here you can marvel in the famous Nottingham Castle or Sherwood Forest and go on a hunt for the infamous Robin Hood. Chesterfield is a must to see the crooked spire that is the centre of this historic market town. All in all Pathways Cottage will not disappoint and really does have something for everyone straight from the doorstep with golf and fishing available locally. Shop ½ mile, two pub’s serving food and one a la carte restaurant within Higham Farm Hotel open to none residents, all within 100 yards.

Fabulous and charming property with lots of thoughtful touches
The photos do not lie. This property is utterly charming. Adding to that, the hosts add lots of thoughtful touches like leaving some milk, snacks, board games and numerous brochures and guides for local attractions. Some other reviewers have mentioned the busy road; don’t let that put you off, be assured the property is not on the busy A road, but is on a local road which does get light traffic, but it is not at all bothersome: you won’t hear it from inside the house. Parking in on the street right outside the property. Perfect! Book without regret, and enjoy your stay, Thank you once again Sam and John.

Relaxing home away
We enjoyed our stay at pathways immensely, It was large enough to accommodate us and dog for the week comfortably. The location was beautiful and friendly with a spacious pub ( the grey hound ) just a small walk down the road which is happy to receive dogs. Our only disappointment was the road outside which became so busy at rush hour times. The views and beauty of the area far outweigh this thankfully. We would definitely return.

Cosy, comfortable cottage
Very well equipped characterful cottage. However, disappointed with the quality of the shower considering the price of the cottage and overall standard of the bathroom. The temperature was impossible to regulate..if there is a nack to it, it would be helpful to have some instruction. Not a normal TV set up and difficult to operate as instructiona were not accurate. Overall we have had a lovely stay despite these couple of issues.

Beautiful cottage, beautiful location but.....
Had s a great few days away with the family. The cottage was very welcoming & well equipped and there was lots to do in the local area. Sadly myself & a family member both had our cars deliberately damaged by an idiotic local. The cottage does have cameras, but alas, these didn’t work.

It didn’t work for us.
Many guests appear to love this property but unfortunately it didn’t work for us. The weather was very poor - nobody’s fault - but heavy rain all day, for seven out of nine days, was depressing. We struggled to dry coats and boots and to wash our dog every time she went outside the door. The two main drawbacks for us, with our collie dog , was a busy road right outside the front door - traffic started at 05.30 and never let-up until bedtime - and the lack of a garden. The small outside area, at the back of the cottage, is paved with raised beds. This meant that every morning, we got out of bed, and got straight into clothes to walk the dog up and down the busy road so she could be toileted. The dog hated the traffic, as did we. The cottage was exceptionally clean and I would say comfortable but not luxurious. We were often cold in the kitchen and the conservatory was always cold. The wood fires are required to maintain a comfortable temperature and ambience. A bag of firewood from TESCO is £5 and that lasts up to three hours. I liked the upstairs of the cottage. We only used the main bedroom; the bed was very large and very comfortable and the carpet was thick. My favourite room in the cottage was the bathroom which was very spacious, clean and warm. It also had the best views in the property. On-demand TV was great and the WiFi signal was strong. The village consists of one street of very, very attractive and interesting homes, and two restaurant / pubs but the volume of traffic spoiled any tranquility.

Great cottage but no shops nearby
We loved this cottage ,its quiet, clean, cosy and actually quite spacious for a cottage. It is on a main road but its not that busy and it didnt bother us . The only problems we had were sorted with a phonecall or txt to julie who offerd to come across and sort the small problem with the living room. The only problem with the location is that there isnt a shop of any description close by, other than that you couldnt fault the place or the people we had a great time. Thanks to Julie and Simon for letting us stay there .

Coming Home
Pathways Cottage is beautiful, cozy, clean, and happy--just like home. Julie and Simon care a lot about their guests. This shows up in every detail. Every household need is anticipated, and then some. The bed is super comfy, and the view from the bathroom window--wow. And wait til you see the garden! The village of Higham has two great restaurants within walking distance. We highly recommend.

Pleasant cottage stay
The cottage has big rooms and all modern conveniences. Very nice for a family with older kids. Even though the outside part is very small (there's no yard), there is a very nice sitting room with great light in the back for relaxing and reading. The house is located in a small village, but since it is right on the main road, there is some traffic that you hear early in the morning if the windows are open. The location, however, makes it very convenient for car travel around the region. Very pleasant spot for exploring the area attractions, such as Hardwick Hall and Crich Tramway Village.

A beautiful cosy cottage in the middle of winter.
The cottage was ideal for our needs. It was beautifully kept with a wealth of features. There was everything there that we needed which immediately made us feel at home. After days out walking it was great to come back to a log burning fire and settle in for the evening.
