Peaceful Listed Cottage attached to Pele Tower with log stove

Situated amongst the hills, castles and beaches of Northumberland, Tower Cottage was originally built in the 16th Century, and is attached to the Pele Tower (dating from 1280 - also on HomeAway property 1873651) and like the tower, is Grade 2* listed. The great stone wall (complete with carved graffiti) forms one side of the kitchen. With a well equipped kitchen, and two double bedrooms, walk-in shower and large living room with log stove, it is a great place to wind down and spend a proper Northumbrian weekend in the hills. It has fields running down to an orchard and to the river in the middle of the village with lovely views into the Cheviots. Historically, it was the birthplace of Henry Ogle, inventor of the reaping machine in 1822 - a major contribution to modern farming.

Pets are welcome (no more than two, and not in the bedrooms - please have a mind to the fact that the next guests may be allergy sensitive)

If you wish to rent the Tower and the cottage together for a larger party, please contact us.

This property is wonderful for a quiet getaway, it’s beautifully decorated with lots of interesting things to discover and the kitchen is so well equipped, we could have easily hosted a 12 person dinner party! You definitely need a vehicle and there is no shop or pub in the village. We really liked the lack of a TV it was a plus. The bedrooms are very tight with little storage and were a bit challenging but the beds were very comfortable. The bathroom was a great size and the shower good but we found the floor got really wet with the wet room concept. If you like quiet, quaint and quirky this is for you.

Lovely family break
4 adults, a tween and a teen in the tower. 4 pensioners in the house next door (no stairs!) 4 night midweek break There's everything you could possibly need except a few consumables like foil (unless previous guests left them), but all the plates, knives, pans etc you need are here. Even firewood for the firepit is in the little shed next to the tower. Great location, beautiful views. Only complaints were - that the beds weren't comfy (4 poster is though) and the cushions/seats on the furniture could do with plumping up / refreshing. But if you're out and about all day, you won't be sitting on them that long. - a manual would be handy, where to find stuff in the house (you find things after a poke around), how to work stuff (trial and error), nearest pubs, things to do etc. But neither of these things even came close to breaking our holiday. I'd recommend this place to anyone!

The cottage is full of character and thoughtfully furnished. Actually enjoyed having no tv. Kids loved the outside space. Summer house was perfect on an evening. Within short driving distance from Alnwick - castle and garden. Communication with host excellent.

Great 4 night stay
We had a lovely peaceful break in a delightful cottage. The grounds are a lot larger than we thought they were going to be and having a dog, we were able to walk her around lovely cut grass paths (on a lead!). Sitting in the log cabin of an evening with a glass of sherry was very pleasant and relaxing. There are good walks around the village and further afield if required.

Recommended historic holiday home
Located at the centre of a historic and beautiful part of Northumberland, visited many castles and stunning coastlines. A rare chance to stay in such a beautiful building. Lack of Tv not a problem at all as there’s so much to see. Wi-Fi fine so we didn’t feel cut off at all. Large garden and pretty village excellent for dogs.

A well maintained, atmospheric property which the owners have decorated sympathetically and tastefully. A lot of thought had gone into supplying everything we needed for a restful and welcoming stay in a lovely peaceful location. The only issue we had was on our final night when the shower cartridge had slipped around making it impossible to turn off the shower, however the owner was very pleasant and eager to help us so this did not spoil our stay in any way. Whittingham is well situated for easy car trips into Alnwick, the Cheviots and the surrounding countryside. We would certainly recommend staying there.

Peaceful retreat
Excellent small cottage with period charm. Enough room for 3 of us and enough facilities both inside and out. Probably no local nightlife with no village pub but Alnwick is a short drive away and so is Rothbury. The locals were very friendly. The property is well presented and feels like the host wants you to have an excellent experience. If you have younger members staying with you, the Northumberland coast is not too far away and has great beaches and harbours to explore with great road links to the coast and north to the Scottish boarders.

Tranquillity
This two bedroom cottage was ideal for the two of us and my dog. The garden gave him some freedom and the walks around the village were quiet and full of trees and birds. The location was perfect for our exploration of the coast including Holy Island. Alnwick was close enough for supplies and an evening drink. The lack of a village shop and pub need to be considered The cottage is beautifully furnished with high quality paintings and photographs. Kitchen is generously equipped. Lack of a TV was no problem with the WiFi good enough to receive signal when required. The provision of Alexa was fun. All in all highly recommended.

Beautifully appointed cottage in peaceful location with cosy log burner
Lovely cottage - very comfortable and quiet. Loved relaxing by the log burner. Great kitchen, very well equipped. Wonderful enclosed garden ideal for children and dogs. We had one or two issues during our stay which were beyond the owner's control, but he could not have been more responsive and helpful to resolve. Best to note down access arrangements and code before you arrive. We had difficulties arriving after dark and finding no phone coverage to retrieve the code.

We arrived during the storms and everything was as described. Access to the key was simple we were quickly inside away from the wind and rain. Definitely would look to return at some time soon.

Clean property but not as quiet/private as we had expected.
Very clean property quite hard to find down a narrow track. Really good size garden but overlooked by a row of houses to the right of the property. Apart from a watching neighbour who appeared each time we went out and noise from people staying in the tower which the cottage is attached to we had a nice stay. Good size well equipped kitchen and good size living room and well equipped. Bedrooms both narrow with not much space to get in and out of bed but very clean and blinds effective in keeping the sun out. The bathroom has the shower in the middle of the room and the floor never dried completely so had to walk across a wet floor to get to the toilet. The cleaner arrived at 10.05 on check out day when our check out time was 11. She was disappointed as "they have a lot to do". Overall we enjoyed the stay but the property was not as quiet as we had been lead to believe and which is what I was looking for. I would recommend a stay to others if you are not as penantic about noise and being overlooked like I am!!

Cosy & Relaxing, Peaceful haven
We stayed while the rest of the family were in the adjoining Pele Tower so we had the best of both worlds. The cottage has everything you need and is also beautifully furnished and decorated. V comfy beds! The weather was warm and sunny so we had all our meals on the sundeck in the meadow admiring the lovely views including amazing sunsets. The combination of historic walls with ancient carvings and modern comfort is great. A few minor quibbles about the wifi coverage (sharing the castle router doesn’t really work) More information about the property & local facilities would have been useful.

Wonderful, relaxing cottage
The cottage was brilliant. Cosy, well stocked and the little welcome package was a lovely extra touch. We had originally booked for May 2020 but the pandemic put an end to that. Ben, the property manager, was awesome. With rules changing almost weekly he allowed us to reorganise our stay on more than one occasion with no fuss and excellent commnication. I can't fault either the accomodation or the service we recieved. We would definitley visit again.
