Enjoy the views of some of the city’s most spectacular attractions from the ornate Old Bridge from the 15th century.

In the center of Wuerzburg, Alte Mainbruecke is a pedestrianized bridge decorated by 12 statues of saints. Dating back to the 1400s, the structure is the oldest bridge on the Main River. Stroll to the center of the bridge and admire the spectacular vista of the Marienberg Fortress to the southwest.

Walk with friends along the bridge, which is 607 feet (185 meters) long. Enjoy the tranquility on this crossing that is devoid of vehicles. Inspect the many statues of saints and rulers that adorn the structure. These include tall figures of St. Joseph with Jesus, St. Friedrich and the Virgin Mary.

The bridge is a popular gathering point for locals and visitors, particularly on warm summer nights. Marvel at the excellent views of the city’s main attractions in the historic center to the east. Walk directly east to the twin-steepled Wuerzburg Cathedral. Come in the evening to see the landmarks illuminated against the night sky.

Relax at the terraces and outdoor seating of one of the bars and restaurants in this lively area. Gaze at the green, undulating terrain in the distance beyond the water.

Note that the bridge was constructed in 1476 and remained the only crossing on the Main River until the late 1800s. An earlier Romanesque stone bridge was built here in the 1100s. The current incarnation was heavily damaged during World War II and later reconstructed. The site’s name is German for Old Main Bridge.

The Alte Mainbruecke crosses the Main River as it passes through the western section of Wuerzburg’s historic center. Walk southwest from the Wuerzburg Hbf railway station to reach the bridge in less than 20 minutes. Visit some of the many surrounding attractions, such as the Altes Rathaus Grafeneckart town hall and the Marienkapelle chapel. Walk about 20 minutes southwest to visit the magnificent large fortress of Festung Marienberg.
