America the Beautiful Park

Stroll, picnic, watch concerts and admire a stunning rotating work of art at this popular downtown recreational space.

A large spiral-like water feature is one of the principal highlights of the America the Beautiful Park. This 30-acre (12-hectare) attractive recreational space also features a children’s play area and superb views of the mountains.

The park was inaugurated in 2005 as part of an initiative to freshen up the city center. Marvel at the exceptional design of the Julie Penrose Fountain that stands in the middle of the park. The impressive work of art sprays out water as it rotates four revolutions per hour. There is a good photo opportunity of Pikes Peak, filmed through the fountain's cascading water columns.

Take off your shoes and socks to splash in the temporary pools of water created by the fountain. Inspect the two large obelisks near the water feature. The information panel on one of the columns explains the origin of and inspiration for the steel structure which celebrates the cycle of water and life.

Watch the children burn off some energy in the playground. There are turntables, spinner bowls, slides, climbing structures and hammocks. Stroll or cycle along the paved paths and then roll out the blanket for a picnic on the grass. Picnic tables are also available.

America the Beautiful Park is open every day from early morning until late in the evening. Look out for public events at the park such as concerts and sports activities. Every fortnight there are musical performances by church groups and community organizations. In July, come for the Pikes Peak Art & Music Festival, three days of live music, hands-on art activities and lots of food.

The wide open space is situated in downtown Colorado Springs, adjacent to Monument Creek. It is well served by public transport and there is a free parking lot. Note that the Julie Penrose Fountain operates in the summer only.
