Anil Beach (Praia do Anil) is the closest beach to the city center of Angra dos Reis. It offers a snapshot of the city’s natural beauty, fishing traditions and shipyard trading activities. Visit Anil Beach to join in games of soccer, paddle in the water and sunbathe.
The beach itself is a short strip of golden sand with few amenities. It’s popular among locals, who come to play beach soccer and volleyball. Some even swim out to the nearby island, Ilha do Coqueiro. Be aware that although the water is calm, due to its proximity to Angra dos Reis Port it suffers from pollution. On a hot day you might want to cool off by dipping your toes in.
Sit on the sand and enjoy fascinating views in all directions. Look back to see colorful townhouses built on the slopes of forest-covered hills. To the west is the port, which incorporates a fishing marina and ferry pier. Linger a while to see a range of cargo ships, fishing boats and passenger ferries.
Amble along the sand or the paved esplanade to Mirante dos Tres Reis lookout. The Três Reis Magos, which are stone statues of the Three Wise Men, guard the entrance to the lookout. Admire the intricate detail of the body parts, crowns and robes. Note how each is depicted carrying the gifts they brought to the birth of Jesus.
When hunger strikes, make your way to the restaurants at the beach’s eastern end. Feast on menus of burgers, pasta, sandwiches and seafood dishes. Grab a seat outside for more impressive views. Street vendors also hawk fruits and drinks, such as fresh coconut juice, from the esplanade.
Anil Beach is less than a 20-minute walk from the city center. It’s less than 10 minutes by foot from the central bus terminal. Parking is available on the beach road.
