The Anita Purves Nature Center is an informative institution where you can learn about the local nature and environment. Classes, exhibits and events helps you piece together an understanding of the flora and fauna in the surrounding Busey Woods. Visit the Anita Purves Nature Center to discover how the eco-system connects all the life in this picturesque woodland spot.
Go on a pleasant walk through the woodland trails and stop to read the plaques with images of the birds and butterflies that live here. Arrive in spring or summer to enjoy the blooming flowers, whose sweet aromas fill the air around the landscaped Habitat Gardens. The boardwalk trail allows you to explore the trails in wet weather.
Within the center, you can talk to the staff about the nature walks and wildlife in the area. Listen to the calls of the woodland animals through the sound system in the Wildlife Observation Room.
Rent one of the center’s multipurpose rooms for a party, workshop or other gathering of up to 75 people. Browse the Audubon Nature Shop for its nature-themed souvenirs and memorabilia. The money from purchases in this volunteer-run store goes towards local conservation projects.
Let your kids frolic in the adjacent Friendship Grove Nature Playscape. Trees, logs, tunnels and digging areas make up this playground area.
The Anita Purves Nature Center is at the north end of Crystal Lake Park in the northern outskirts of Urbana. From the heart of the city, it’s about a 30-minute walk north to reach the center. Alternatively, travel here by bus to a stop beside the center. It opens Monday through Saturday from morning until late afternoon. Admission is free donations are welcome.
While in the area, visit some of its neighboring attractions, including the Champaign County Fair Association, the Vineyard Church and the Urbana Country Club.
