The Anthropology and History Museum of Baja California Sur looks back on the history of the region through its range of fascinating displays. Among myriad other topics, these collections contain fossils from millions of years ago and archaeological relics that give insights into the lives of the first humans here. Take the guided visit and chat with a docent about the intriguing history.

Look through some of the temporary displays, which have covered such diverse themes as Colonization, Cave Paintings and Independence, Revolution and the 20th Century. These help provide a comprehensive understanding of the history of Baja California Sur. Watch the introductory film and explore the three levels of the museum to see its permanent collections.

Inspect the array of tools and weapons used by the people living on Isla Espiritu Santo about 40,000 years ago. Understand everyday details of their lives through their crafts and utensils. You’ll also find books from religious missions and stones with inscriptions.

Learn about the traditional practice of pearl diving in the area and hear about the copper and gold miners. In addition, the museum shows how locals defended their terrain against outsiders.

Browse the array of books lining the shelves of the library and purchase souvenirs from the gift shop. Participate in some of the contemporary art classes and workshops that are organized in the museum.

Note that there is an admission fee to enter the museum, which opens Monday through Sunday from morning until early evening. It was inaugurated in 1981.

The Anthropology and History Museum of Baja California Sur is on the eastern edge of the Zona Comercial district in central La Paz. Walk southeast for 10 minutes from the Dove of Peace Monument to get here.
