Covering an area of 400 square kilometres stretching from the northern tip of the Malacca Strait to the mainland north of Phuket Island, Ao Phang Nga National Park manages to be both a popular visitor attraction and an unspoilt natural wonderland.Comprising around 40 islands in addition to stretches of mainland coastline, this stunning national park is full of variety and interest. Film buffs will immediately recognise James Bond Island, the setting for the film The Man with the Golden Gun, while the characteristic ‘nail’-shaped limestone spear of Ko Tapu has lent an unmistakable perspective to many gap year holiday snaps.Wildlife thrives in the shallow waters of the bays and dense undergrowth of the hillsides. Look out for indigenous reptiles as they scurry across your path, and watch the local fisherman landing their tasty catch along the waterways that criss-cross the country’s largest remaining mangrove forest. There are many different options for exploring this unspoilt area, and most local tour companies offer convenient day packages which include hotel transfers and boat trips to the most scenic locations. For a general overview of the outstanding natural beauty of the area, take an island-hopping cruise past towering cliffs, impenetrable forests and secluded coves.Other itineraries include a stop for a refreshing swim, or a visit to some of the limestone caves for which the area is famous. Alternatively, hire a canoe to reach some of the less touristy parts of the park under your own steam, or indulge in a romantic champagne lunch on a deserted beach in true 007 style. The traditional Muslim fishing village of Ko Panyi is one of the highlights of many tours. This picturesque village on stilts is a great place to sample some of the freshest seafood in the area, while the locally made handicrafts make delightful souvenirs to take home to friends.
