Plunge into the refreshing pool at the base of this 72-feet (22-meter) high waterfall in the heart of a tropical forest.

The Arco Iris Waterfall, is one of Soroa’s gems. Clamber up the 279 stone steps to the very top of the falls to watch as the water tumbles down in a swirl of mist and rainbows and discover why it got its name, which translates to mean “Rainbow Waterfall.”

Venture into the heart of the Sierra del Rosario for a truly tropical experience. Walk through the lush vegetation of this natural park in Artemisa province, where wildlife and vegetation abound and the trees grow to some 115 feet (35 meters) in height. Look for the region’s famous naturally growing orchids. Climb the steps as they wind their way up to staggering viewpoints over the Arco Iris Waterfall (also known as the Salto de Soroa) and gaze down at the cascades, which form part of the series of waterfalls of the Manantiales River.

Cool off in the plunge pools at the base of the falls, which form inviting natural swimming pools. Several pools can be explored and it is also possible to get behind the falls for a romantic view through the curtain of water. This is one of the best places to see rainbows form in the spray.

Visit during the rainy season of May to October, when the torrent is most impressive and the pools are deeper. At other times of the year, the Arco Iris can be reduced to no more than a trickle. The pools, however, generally remain deep enough to swim in.

After a swim, enjoy something to eat in the small restaurant at the base of the steps. The restaurant is a unique place in which to sip a cool drink or have lunch and simply soak up the natural surroundings.

Find the Arco Iris Waterfall just north of the town of Soroa. A path leads from opposite the famous Orquideario orchid garden into the Sierra del Rosario. Well-marked footpaths lead from the parking area to the base of the falls. Embark on one of the easiest and most rewarding off-the-beaten-path adventures in Cuba.
