Discover this little-explored Eurasian nation, which features dramatic canyons, medieval monasteries and a relaxed capital with a thriving café culture.

Explore the rugged roads and wilderness of Armenia, a small country that used to be a part of the Soviet Union. Adventurous travelers who are willing to step outside their comfort zone and venture where few other tourists go will thrive here. Hike through canyons, browse exhibits in museums and enjoy peaceful moments in Armenia’s ancient monasteries.

The capital city of Yerevan in central Armenia is a lively place. Spend your days people-watching from outdoor cafés and wandering down the tree-lined avenues. In Republic Square, musical fountains provide an incredible show. For an overview of the region’s history, browse the Bronze Age artifacts and medieval costumes on show at the History Museum of Armenia.

To the north of Yerevan is Ashtarak, home to the Hovhannavank. This monastery sits on the edge of a gorge in a small village and was once a leading theological center. Inspect the frescoes painted onto the church walls and marvel at the views out across the Kasagh River canyon.

In the mountainous region of Armenia lies Debed Canyon, a vast area most easily explored by car. Visit the medieval monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin, and pull over at small villages en route to observe the local way of life. Look for roadside stands selling Armenian barbecue and fresh fruits in the summer months.

Most visitors reach Armenia by flying into Yerevan from surrounding countries, though it is also possible to do an overland trip from neighboring Georgia. Spring is generally recommended as a great time to visit Armenia because of the mild temperatures and blooming wildflowers. Go in summer for hot temperatures and sunshine, or wait until the fall when the heat becomes more comfortable and the daylight is long.

Due to its shared borders with unstable countries, it is essential for all travelers to check any government warnings relating to the regions in Armenia they plan to visit.

Come to Armenia to enjoy the rich culture, medieval architectural marvels and unspoiled landscapes of this former Soviet state.
