Browse works by artists native to Hokkaido island at this small museum located in one of Asahikawa’s most picturesque parks.

The Hokkaido Asahikawa Museum of Art provides an introduction to the art and handicraft culture of the Dohoku area of northern Hokkaido. Asahikawa is home to a thriving woodworking industry with artisans engaged in all types of creation. The gallery strives to showcase the talents of regional craftspeople via themed exhibitions. See displays of everything from statues and furniture to ceramics and paintings at the Asahikawa Museum of Art.

Exhibits are displayed inside a building designed by Yoshiya Tanoue, who was influenced by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Tanoue built several prominent landmarks on Hokkaido. The permanent collection features predominantly local artists. Browse themes that range from the expression of the human image in paintings and sculptures to the relationship between nature and art.

A previous exhibit centered on the role of women in Japanese modern art. Others have showcased modern French art and the ceramics of Kitaoji Rosanjin. The museum has also hosted the annual Mainichi Shodo, which is Japan’s biggest exhibition of calligraphy and includes all seven calligraphic categories. Check online to preview the featured exhibit that will be in place during your visit.

The museum is in the southwestern corner of Tokiwa Park. From Asahikawa Station travel here within 10 minutes by car or 25 minutes by foot. After your visit, stroll through the park along pathways lined by cherry trees. Admire the seasonal cherry blossoms and watch swans swimming in the ponds. The park also has a sculpture collection and a temple and hosts the annual Asahikawa Winter Festival.

Hokkaido Asahikawa Museum of Art is open from Tuesday to Sunday and has an admission fee, with reduced prices for seniors, students and children. Information about current exhibitions is available via the museum’s official website, which is in Japanese, but can be translated online.

Along with the Asahikawa City Museum and Asahikawa Museum of Sculpture, this is one of several museums providing a glimpse of the art and folkloric heritage of the city.
