Belgium’s royal, political and military history can be found at the most comprehensive national museum in Belgium.

Discover the history of the young country of Belgium at the city’s national history museum. The permanent exhibition at BELvue provides information on the revolution that brought independence to Belgium, the early years of the nation under the rule of King Leopold I and the German invasions of the 20th century. The museum is the best destination for Belgian history in Brussels.

The building itself is historically significant. It existed for over 100 years as the Bellevue Hotel, a destination for foreign dignitaries visiting the city, and it was once residence for Belgian royals. The museum takes its name from both Belgium and the Bellevue Hotel.

Visit the three floors of exhibits in chronological order, providing an engaging historical journey regardless of the extent of your prior knowledge. Displays are full of images and colorful stories, making it appealing to younger audiences. In one wing of the former palace, learn about the constitutional monarchy that has ruled Belgium since 1830. The interior architecture gives an insight into the lavish buildings of European monarchs.

Spend some time browsing temporary exhibits. These are constantly changing, and often cover topics relating to Belgian history and democracy. Check the BELvue Museum website for details about current exhibits.

After you’ve explored the exhibitions, take the time to eat at the museum restaurant. Green Kitchen is a culinary experience of fresh produce. All dishes served at the restaurant are made entirely from ingredients prepared in the kitchen of the onsite farm. Enjoy a fresh salad or warm soup and combine it with your admission price for a discount.

BELvue Museum is located in central Brussels and can be reached by car or metro. There are a number of paid parking facilities in the area. The museum is closed on Mondays and there is a small admission fee for entry.
