The Bastion of Parsano is part of the ancient wall that used to circle Sorrento, even before the Romans ruled the area. Walking around is free, so first visit in the morning to investigate the details and come back after dark for a panoramic view when the structure is lit up.Part of the Ancient Walls of Sorrento, the Bastion of Parsano dates back to around the fourth century B.C. The town was arranged in classical Roman style and built over the existing Greek street plan, so the archeological finds in Sorrento are mixed. Throughout the centuries, the solid walls of the bastion have stood firm, keeping Sorrento’s citizens safe. During the 16th century the bastion was used to discourage a Saracen invasion.When you arrive at the partly preserved bastion, look down through the metal grate near the entrance. You will see sections of the original Greek wall and some of the Roman remains. These ruins are among the last surviving sections of the original structure and were excavated in 1921. More recently, the structure has undergone extensive renovations.Be sure to pick up a visitor brochure from one of the attendants to learn more about the stronghold. These free leaflets explain the history of the fortifications and the raids and sieges they withstood. Follow the walkway and observe the neat rows of stones that are made of tufa, a type of limestone. Note the thickness of the walls to appreciate how robust the city’s defenses were. Enjoy the views over parts of the city, a picturesque sight. Come back at night when the bastion is an even more attractive sight as the archways, stone staircases and walls are illuminated by white lights.The entrance of the Bastion of Parsano is situated on Via Sersale, off Sorrento’s main road, Corso Italia. It is only a short walk from Piazza Tasso.The Bastion of Parsano is open in the late mornings and evenings only. There is no admission fee.
