Spend days hiking along mountain trails through dense forests. Explore the park’s zoo, museums and ice skating rink.

Bear Mountain State Park borders the Hudson River, which meanders through green hills full of forests. Visit this large park comprising 5,067 acres (2,050 hectares) of scenic land to participate in varied outdoor activities, from ice skating and cross-country skiing in winter to cycling and cross-country running in other seasons. Follow part of the famous Appalachian Trail, which winds through the park.

Trailside Museums & Zoo is one of the park’s highlights. Watch videos and displays about intriguing animals. Topics include an explanation of pollination and the myth of the Woolly bear caterpillar. See native turtles, snakes and frogs in the Herpetology House. Visit the Nature Study Museum and the Geology Museum to find out about the region’s intriguing natural history. To learn about the area’s human past, head to the History Museum, which has exhibits about Native American settlers.

Fish on the Hudson River or on the main lake. Swim in these natural water features or in the park’s large swimming pool, which is surrounded by trees and generates the feel of a natural lake. Take the kids to the children’s playground and go on family hikes among the breathtaking mountainous and forest scenery.

In winter, try ice skating on the outdoor rink. Rent equipment from the rink and glide along the surface with your friends. Watch a game of ice hockey or don your pads and join in.

The park is open to visitors daily year-round from morning until sunset. Times vary for specific attractions, such as the zoo, museums, ice rink and swimming zones. Pay a daily use fee per vehicle or purchase a season pass. Other attractions have varying costs and discounts.

Bear Mountain State Park is spread across the counties of Orange and Rockland in southeastern New York State. The car journey north from New York City is about 50 miles (80 kilometers).
