The Beiji Xuantian Shangdi is a remarkable Taoist temple that resemblesa giant warrior. Built by the Ming Dynasty in the 1600s, the fearsome sculptureremains in remarkable condition after several recent renovations. Step insideto see an interior housing a collection of antique works of art from severalformer empires.

When you arrive at the temple, stroll along the pier and admireits patterned floor. Appreciate the panoramic views of the lake as you walkthrough ornate arches and past statues.

Gaze up at the imposing figure of a Taoist deity. Note his swordand colorful garments. The statue provides a fantastic photo opportunity with LotusPond and the city’s skyscrapers behind it. The tall structure rises to greatheights and is visible from across the lake.

Note the plaques with inscriptions that date back to the QingDynasty, which ruled China from the 17th through the 20th centuries. Try todecipher the set of 19th-century doorway couplets.

Learn about the Taoist deity Xuan Tian Shang Di, who is said towatch over the residents of the region. He is known for his ability to cureillness and drive away evil.

Locals affectionately know the site as “The Great Zuoying Temple,”as it is considered the primary religious site in the area. The renovationsthat took place in the 1970s mean the temple is still in pristine condition.

The temple is open daily from early in the morning until late inthe evening. Use the parking lot if you drive. Consider cycling here with arented bicycle from Public City Bike near the Zuoying High Speed rail station.The station has frequent connections to central Kaohsiung.

Be sure to explore the surrounds of the temple. The temple overlooksthe vast Lotus Pond and the scenic Zhouzi Wetland Park beyond, and there areseveral other attractions nearby, including the Spring and Autumn Pavilion, andDragon and Tiger Pagodas.
