Hike, drive or ride a scooter up the winding road to this magnificent lookout affording a panorama of the surrounding bays, jagged peaks, valleys and farms.

Belvedere Lookout is a prominent viewpoint that rewards visitors with sweeping views across the northern half of the island. Make your way up the steep track that zigzags up the slope of Mount Tohivea and reach the mesmerizing heights of this scenic lookout. Take photographs of the panoramic scenery and see if you can point out Moorea’s landmarks.

If you feel like some exercise, don’t miss an invigorating hike up to the Belvedere Lookout. The viewpoint is also accessible by scooter, ATV or car. There are two main routes to Belvedere Lookout, depending on whether you depart from Cook’s Bay or Opunohu Bay. On the Cook’s Bay route you’ll wind your way through lush tropical forest and fields of pineapples as the path undulates over the hillsides. Depart from Opunohu Bay to pass through Moorea’s pristine natural preserve and check out the local Agricultural School (Lycee Agricole). Take a rest stop at the school and sample some of their items for sale, including freshly squeezed tropical fruit juice, sorbets and jams.

The view from the top is sure to impress. Take in the panorama of the town of Pao Pao, the fertile Opunohu Valley and its terraces of pineapple plantations. See gentle slopes rise into the towering spires of Mount Rotui, as well as the spectacular twin bays of the island, Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay. Be sure to set aside some time to take photographs of the magnificent vista. The lookout’s easy accessibility means it can be a very popular spot, especially at sunset. There is a snack stand and souvenir stand at the lookout.

From here, you can continue to explore the hiking trails that meander around the slopes of Mount Tohivea. Moorea’s tallest peak is 3,960 feet (1,207 meters) and the Belvedere Lookout is situated around 1,000 feet (300 meters) below, affording it some of the island’s best views. You might see geckos and salamanders on your trek, as well as views of Mount Mouaroa.

Belvedere Lookout is easy to reach from both Pao Pao and Papetoai. The lookout is free to visit at any time, but be sure to go on a clear day to experience the most extensive views.
