An impressive entanglement of rods and poles, the Beppu Tower is a modern skyscraper rising above Beppu Bay. Near the top is a deck providing views of the picturesque strand and the rest of the city. Gaze up at the glorious tower at night, when it glows in bright neon lights of varying colors. Enjoy drinks in the tower’s lounge and admire the view out the windows. In the evening, the tower provides a vista of the countless lights of Beppu on one side, broken up by the darkness of the sea to the east. On a clear day, spot the green mountains in the distance and the golden sand making up the bay.
Learn about the tower’s history. It was constructed in 1956, when it was initially known as the Sightseeing Center TV Tower. It was built by famous architect Naito Tachu, known for designing the Tokyo Tower. Today it is used as a broadcast tower for television.
Pay the entrance fee at the ticket vending machines near the elevator. Admission is half-price for children. The site is open to the public Thursday through Tuesday from morning until night.
Ride the train to the Beppu railway station and walk east for 10 minutes to get to the Beppu Tower. The skyscraper overlooks the beach on the eastern side of the city center. Make sure to visit other nearby attractions such as Matogahama Park, Kitahama Park and the Kaimonji Hot Spring.
