Bonfim Beach

Swim in the warm water, visit an 18th-century church and board a catamaran for a sailing trip around Ilha Grande at this pretty beach.

Away from the bustle of Angra dos Reis’ commercial center is Bonfim Beach (Praia do Bonfim). This relaxed cove fronts a small village that sits in the shadow of hills covered with tropical rainforest. Splash around in the enticing sea of Bonfim Beach and snap postcard-worthy souvenir photographs. Attend a festival at an island church and join a cruise around the Angra dos Reis archipelago.

There’s a clean strip of soft golden sand to sit on, top up your tan and enjoy the views. You won’t find sun umbrellas or loungers here so bring a towel to lay down on. Yachts and fishing boats moor in the water and further enhance the beach’s visual appeal. The water is calm, shallow and transparent, thus ideal for taking a swim on warm, sunny days. Look down to see starfish resting on the seabed and spot schools of colorful fish.

Perched on an island a short distance from the shore is the Bonfim Church, a quaint chapel erected in 1780. In May it hosts a festival with food stands and live music. It’s possible to swim here, although this is recommendable to strong swimmers only. Otherwise speak to the boat owners at the pier about getting a ride out to the church.

Throughout the year a catamaran departs from the pier on day and overnight trips to Ilha Grande. Relax as you sail past the beautiful landscapes of an archipelago of over 300 islands. Tours include meals, snacks and soft drinks. Ask at the tourist information office in Angra dos Reis for more details.

Bonfim Beach is just a 10-minute drive to the southwest of the city center. If you are feeling energetic walk there via paved sidewalks it takes about 40 minutes. Parking is possible on the village streets, although spaces fill up quickly on weekends and during the high season. In the village you’ll find bakeries, guesthouses, restaurants and supermarkets.
