Wonderful property. Very pleasant setting. Only 20 minutes from there center of Bordeaux. HOWEVER, do NOT try to drive to Bordeaux from this hotel. It took me more than one hour because of the horrible traffic, the oneway streets, the street closures, etc.. even with Gps.Likewise for returning to the hotel from the city center

Very unique, beautiful hotel on a special location that facing Bordeaux Center, and you can lying on bed or poolside or restaurant for beautiful sunset. No elevators on site, but they have staffs to carry luggage for you. There is a nice restaurant on site. The staff called and checked on us around 9pm, but then after 11pm, the front desk called and said one of the customers reported that our car front light was on, but the problem was they parked our car and they had our key and they asked us to go down to grab the key and walk down a very dark driveway to their parking area to check our car, that was a bit ruined our night.

The staff was great and the grounds are spectacular, with an amazing view of Bordeaux, but the hotel was disappointing- I booked this hotel because of their restaurant just to discover, with no prior information, that it closes Sunday and Monday, the 2 days we were there. They said they send me a notice, but I never received it, maybe because I booked through another party. The hotel is tired and old, and the rooms are not very clean, I have pictures of dirty bathroom doors, stained floors, etc... It was hard for me to climb onto the bed, it was so high, granted I’m only 5’2” feet. Hard mattresses, the room has an uncomfortable layout, with nowhere to sit near the bed and dark sitting area. I suppose it was a ground-breaking architectural project in its day, by Jean Nouvel, but quite frankly, it is uncomfortable, and the rusted iron outside is an eyesore, in contrast to the beautiful old farm house. I guess it was my fault for booking it, but I didn’t realize that it was so far from anything. There is absolutely nothing to do near the hotel, except some walks on some beautiful trails if you like exercise. They have a restaurant affiliated to the hotel a couple of minute’s walk, with bad service and even worse food, for the price. We did find a little gem of a restaurant a couple kms walk from the hotel, if you don’t mind the hike, with much better food at half the price in Latresne…you know where the French eat. Won't go back.

Excellent restaurant with rooms.
We stayed for 6 nights in this arty hotel. The bedroom was slightly style over comfort but had a wonderful view. The shower wasn't fixed and soaked the floor and there was no privacy when showering which may be a problem for friends sharing a bedroom. However the staff were lovely and the ambience was great and a meal in the restaurant was fantastic. A special mention to Monsieur Phillip who made us smile every morning.

The hotel was great, but the receptionists really need to do a public relations course. They were blunt to the point of being rude. However the location and hotel facilities were fantastic.

Wonderful hotel, highly recommend it!
wonderful hotel, highly recommend it! The hotel is wonderfully designed by an important French architect. The restaurant is Michelin starred. Hotel staff are friendly and the service is top. I would give this hotel 5 not 4 stars. It is located in a nice little village outside of Bordeaux. The rooms look onto the city and the views are great. The black pool was very special and still great to swim in even though it was late October when we stayed. Highly recommend the St. James!

Panorama of Bordeaux
Great facilities and fantastic food with 270 deg. view of Bordeaux river valley. It is in a tiny village on hillside outside of Bordeaux. Unless you are in to relaxing by pool, reading, and short walks around town, then a car is a must. We were early in the season, so staff was able to be very accommodating for early check-in and late check-out. Every one was very friendly. Their dining room is the place to go for celebration meals -- very high class cuisine at high end prices (at least by USA standards). They also have a bistro a block away with more everyday fare that is half the price of the hotel dining room and well patronized by locals at lunch and dinner. Will definitely recommend and stay there again when in the area.

Room with a view
My husband and I were in love with our room at St. James. Unique and slightly eccentric on the top floor with a view overlooking Bordeaux. Truly spectacular to wake up to. The room was always well cleaned and every evening we were greeted with a box of chocolates and candies on our bed. The rest of the hotel however isn't wasn't as impressive. The wifi didn't work in our room for the first few days (and no one made any attempt to fix it despite our complaints). The hallway leading to the rooms wasn't heated (quite cold and leaking water!) and the walkway leading out of the hotel room area required us to regularly dodge crowds of waitstaff carrying platters full of dishes and food... I certainly now understand why other reviewers noted this was a restaurant first and hotel second. We had one nice young lady greet us at the front desk but the remainder were quite rude and unprofessional... it seems this hotel would gain a lot by investing more attention to training their staff. So in sum, the hotel room was amazing, the rest I could forget!

Ego over practicality. Overpriced.
Style without practicality. Bed too high, toilet too narrow, sofa too low, inadequate lighting in sitting/reading area, shower screen too short so water everywhere and floors slippery. Restaurant closed - only hot option on room service was soup - tasteless and cold. Food extremely expensive - including 10 Euros for an egg as an extra to the 25 Euro breakfast. Feeling that the hotel thinks it is really good - but it isn't!!
