Bourse-Esplanade
A fortress hidden within a park and one of the world’s oldest active public baths feature in this diverse part of the city.

Historic vestiges and vast green parks are some of the attractions in Bourse-Esplanade in the heart of Strasbourg. The district’s scenic promenades are lined with quaint façades of medieval buildings overlooking canals. Traverse the neighborhoods making up this dynamic region for an overview of the city’s architecture and history.

The center of the Bourse zone, which is known for its financial institutions, is anchored by the Place d’Austerlitz. Spend a while in this square to get a sense of the local culture. Relax by the fountains, watch people play chess and visit the surrounding bars. Before leaving check out the sculpted three-dimensional map of the city.

Marking the southeastern corner of the Esplanade area is Citadel Park. Appreciate how the gardens harmonize with the ruins of an imposing fortress. Bring food and drinks for a picnic on the banks of the moat. Watch sports in the Vauban Stadium at the northern end of the park.

Make your way north to the Krutenau neighborhood, in the southeastern corner of the historic center. Here, you’ll find Sainte-Madeleine Church, with its gothic tower and rich history. Admire the medieval architecture and pass through the arch of the Porte des Ramparts.

Browse the stores and art galleries in timbered buildings lining the Krutenau Quays. Visit the saunas, steam rooms and pools of the neo-Romanesque Strasbourg Municipal Baths, built in 1908.

A little southeast is the University of Strasbourg, dating back to the 1500s. The campus has a blend of sleek, modern structures and historic buildings.

Starting a little south of the historic center of Strasbourg, the Bourse-Esplanade district stretches east toward the Bassin Vauban waterway. Ride a bus to one of the many stops in the area or take the tram to the Winston Churchill station. Across the canal lies the Neudorf district, while continuing east will take you to the German border.

Enjoy the Bourse-Esplanade, a diverse zone full of greenery, waterways and historic sights.
