Go for a short hike and have a picnic with a view of a waterfall that tumbles through the lush tropical greenery in cascades as fine as lace.

Le Voile de la Mariée is a waterfall in the northern part of Réunion’s verdant interior. Known in English as Bridal Veil Falls, this waterfall is one of the island’s most magnificent sights. Admire the arresting sight of fine cascades leaping through a canopy of tropical foliage from the road or take the short stroll down to the waterfall’s base.

Driving toward Hell-Bourg, you’ll see the eastern side of the island’s ancient caldera covered in a lush carpet of greenery. Emergent trees reach from the sun from below the dense canopy. See the networks of waterfalls cascading from green-fringed precipices approximately 1,706 feet (520 meters) above sea level and tumbling into the river below. The views from the road are especially spectacular after heavy rains, when the veil of water interlocks across the mountainside. Take photographs of the mountains that rise up behind the waterfall. These form the border between Salazie and the plateau of Bélouve.

See the waterfall up close by going for a short walk through the forest. Make your way over the river by walking across a suspended footbridge. On the other side of the river, you’ll meander through fields. You might spot crops of watercress or chayotes, which are a green-colored fruit shaped like a pear. If you’re feeling up to the challenge, find your way to the base of the waterfall. This spot is ideal for a rest and a picnic, so bring some food and drinks to enjoy.

Le Voile de la Mariée (Bridal Veil Falls) is in the Salazie commune of the island of Réunion. It is 11 miles (17.8 kilometers) from Saint Andre on the island’s northeastern coast. You can reach the waterfall from Saint Andre in approximately 25 minutes by car. The trail through the forest may be unmarked and may only be suitable for experienced hikers. Take care when navigating the vegetation and ensure you bring plenty of water and sun protection.
