Visit the Burj Doha, a landmark high-rise built on the city’s waterfront in 2012. The bullet-shaped tower has won several awards for its unique design, which draws on Islamic heritage as well as modern influences.
One of the most beautiful features of the building is the intricate façade, which is inspired by mashrabiya, traditional Islamic latticework. Step inside the building to see the changing patterns of light that are created on the floor and walls as the sun shines in.
The Burj Doha was the brainchild of French architect Jean Nouvel, who won the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2008 while this tower was under construction. Note that he designed a similar shaped building in Barcelona, the Torre Agbar.
The tower is mostly used for offices, but a private residence is located at the very top of the tower in the beautiful dome, more than (600 feet) 180 meters above the ground. Step inside the lobby and look up to see the 367-foot-high (112-meter) open atrium. Ride in one of the scenic glass elevators that have been designed to enhance the views of the surrounding city.
For spectacular vistas of Burj Doha and the other skyscrapers in the area, stroll along the Corniche. As it has a prime position on the waterfront with no other buildings in front of it, Burj Doha can also be seen from the water.
For the best photos take a dhow boat trip around the harbor. A great time to see the tower is at night when it is often illuminated.
The Burj Doha is free to enter and is located on the Corniche next to Doha’s World Trade Center. If you are traveling by public transportation, ride the train and stop at the West Bay or DECC metro station. The Corniche is a popular spot for tourists and locals, with plenty of coffee shops, restaurants and hotels in the area. If you are driving, select from several underground parking lots that are open to the public.
