Ride in a glass-bottomed boat to spot colorful clownfish and yellow-brown wrasse at Busena Marine Park, the only underwater observatory on Okinawa.
Located at the end of a pier 560 feet (170 meters) away from the Busena coastline, this stunning observatory is one of the best places in Okinawa to truly immerse yourself in the island’s fascinating marine life.
While you wait on the pier for departure, purchase fish food from one of the dispensers. Toss it into the water and watch as the surface bubbles with the fish coming to eat. You’ll recognize the boat as it approaches, as it is painted to look like a smiling whale.
Climb aboard for a 20-minute tour of Nago Bay. Look down into the clear water below and see schools of blue damselfish, Moorish idols and angelfish, as well as popular clownfish. Look between the pastel fingers of coral and you might spot lobsters or octopus. The staff onboard are extremely friendly and knowledgeable, though their English is often limited.
The highlight of the marine park is the underwater observatory at the far end of the long pier. This large, cylindrical building goes down to 16 feet (5 meters) below sea level. Gaze out of the 24 round windows to enjoy 360-degree views of the local marine life. Watch as tropical and sub-tropical fish swim right up to the glass in front of your eyes.
Busena Marine Park is located in the middle of Nago Bay. Drive about 20 minutes south of Nago City or about 1.5 hour north of the capital, Naha. There is an admission fee for all ages that includes the cost of the glass-bottomed boat tour and a visit to the observatory.
