Cabo Mayor Lighthouse

Go up to a 19th-century cliff top lighthouse for fabulous sea views and to study its rich collection of art.

The Cabo Mayor Lighthouse has been watching over the entrance to Santander Bay since 1839. Although still used as a navigational aid, parts of the ash-colored cylindrical tower and attached buildings have been transformed into an arts center. Peruse artistic interpretations of the lighthouse and coastal landscape and appreciate the views from the cliff the landmark structure stands on.

Stand in front of the lighthouse to look out at the ocean from the balcony. If there are passing ships try to get close-up views through the permanently mounted binoculars.

Go into the Cabo Mayor Room in the old lighthouse keeper's house. This is the focal point of the arts center and it features paintings of the lighthouse and sea by Eduardo Sanz. He was a Santander native noted for the hyperrealism of his work. Next door is the Cabo Menor Room. It is home to lighthouse paintings by other Spanish artists. Then go to the Anular Room at the base of the lighthouse. It features a collection of objects such as jewelry, stamps, posters, and coins that have lighthouses in their designs.

After your visit explore the surrounding Cabo Mayor and Cabo Menor headlands. The area encompasses the Parque de Mataleñas and Forestral Park. This is a tree-top adventure park for all the family. It has courses that snake their way through the trees with zip lines, rope bridges and elevated walkways to get around.

Cabo Mayor Lighthouse is located in the most northeasterly point of Santander, 3 miles (5 kilometers) away from the center. Drive and use the free parking spaces outside the tower or come by public transportation. Buses stop about a 20-minute walk away. A fun and scenic way to get here is the 1.5-mile (2.5-kilometer) walk from the Parque de Mataleñas, a route that offers exceptional sea views. The lighthouse is open every day except Mondays and admission is free.
