Appreciate the impressive buildings and statues and browse the many shops on this central commercial avenue in the old town district.

The Calle Uria is considered the main artery of Oviedo’s old quarter in the heart of the city. Partly running alongside the edge of the Campo de San Francisco park, the street comprises a wide avenue flanked by restaurants, bars and the main commercial outlets of the city. Snap photos of some of the most impressive buildings that line this iconic street.

Relax in a café and watch people go by on this lively street. Judge the latest fashion trends of the region in the many clothes boutiques dotted along the avenue. Pastry shops, bars and restaurants add to the dynamic setting. Embark on a pleasant stroll along the wide sidewalks to get a sense of the layout and architecture of the old quarter of the city.

Among the highlights in the area is the Casa Blanca, which towers above the middle section of the street. Gaze up at the tall white structure, with its opulent art deco design. See also the neo-Baroque frontages of the four joined buildings that form the Casas del Cuitu complex. Identify the functionalist design of the old Aramo cinema, a building that was completed in 1941.

Reach the southeastern part of the street and enjoy the views of the leafy Campo de San Francisco park. It was laid out in the early 19th century in what was once the orchards and gardens of the San Francisco Convent. Today it’s the city’s premier green space and is filled with trees such as chestnuts, plane trees, oaks and English elms.

Note that the street takes its name from the 19th-century Oviedo writer and politician José Francisco Uría y Riego.

The Calle Uria runs southeast from the Oviedo railway station to the Campo de San Francisco park in the historic center of the city. Get a bus to one of the stops along the street or walk from the train station. Go to some of the nearby sights in the region, such as the San Juan Church, the Casino de Asturias and the Campoamor Theater.
