Sculpted by nature over millions of years, Camelback Mountain is a popular spot for hiking and rock climbing and is a must for outdoor enthusiasts and adventurers. Considered by many as the jewel of the desert, this iconic landmark has a distinctive sandstone and granite formation which looks like a camel resting on the hazy Phoenix horizon. At 824 metres above sea level, this mighty monolith is the highest mountain in Phoenix. Reaching the summit can be arduous but it is also incredibly rewarding as the sweeping views over Arizona and the Valley of the Sun are absolutely breathtaking. There are two main hiking trails that ascend from the base at Echo Canyon and both are considered strenuous and steep. The Echo Canyon Summit Trail is a challenging 3.7-kilometre round trip. At just over two kilometres, the Cholla Trail is more gradual but does get increasingly rocky and precipitous as you approach the top.As you hike your way up through the impressive sandstone formations, take a moment to remember those who came before. Nestled into the northern side of the mountain is a sacred Hohokam ceremonial cave. Although these indigenous peoples vanished sometime in the 14th century, their influence has remained and many still refer to this majestic rock as ‘Sacred Mountain’.On both trails, brace yourself for a steady incline over loose gravel with some slippery sections peppered in between. At times, you may be climbing over boulders on all fours so be prepared for that! As you ascend, admire the natural flora and fauna of this part of the Sonoran Desert. Look out for native wildlife like squirrels and lizards but most importantly, rattlesnakes. The subtle nuances of light and shadow in this part of the desert make for stunning photographs so make sure to bring your camera. This mighty mountain demands your respect. Don’t tackle it when the sun is high in the sky and allow three hours for a comfortable round trip. Be sensible and know your limits. Bring plenty of water and wear appropriate attire. This is not Croagh Patrick and the heat here can kill you. In fact, for a truly memorable experience, time your ascent to coincide with the spectacular Arizona sunrise. Not only will you escape the heat but the photos will be out of this world.
