Canterbury
This gorgeous region encompasses the soaring Southern Alps and New Zealand’s highest peak, picturesque bays, sweeping coastlines, glacial lakes and fertile green plains.

With a diverse landscape and a wealth of natural attractions, visitors are never short of fun things to see and do in Canterbury. Enjoy skiing, whitewater rafting, whale watching, wine sipping and mountain biking all in one region.

Relax in the thermal waters of Tekapo Hot Springs, overlooking Lake Tekapo and the surrounding mountains, or ride down the large inflatable water slide. Heli-hike over Tasman Glacier or take a boat ride through the terminal lake at Aoraki Mount Cook Village to marvel at New Zealand's tallest mountain.

Cycle along the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail, which stretches for 190 miles (300 kilometers) through some of the country’s most dramatic scenery. Marvel at Māori rock art, glacier lakes and limestone cliffs along the route. Hike through Arthur’s Pass National Park, filled with dense rainforest and inquisitive parrots, until you reach Arthur’s Pass, the highest pass across the Southern Alps.

Ride the TranzAlpine railway between Christchurch and Greymouth. Often considered one of the world’s most scenic rail journeys, it cuts through mountains, plains and a national park. In Christchurch, stroll around the city to admire the street art scene and try punting on the Avon River.

Go wine tasting in the vineyards in the Waipara Valley. Rent a bike to travel between wineries, of which there are more than 60.

Take a dolphin-watching cruise in Akaroa, a French colonial town whose coastline is inhabited by some of the region’s most diverse marine life. Go whale watching in Kaikoura, where a boat will take you to one of the best sites for spotting sperm whales, humpbacks and orcas.

Fly into Christchurch Airport and then ride the buses or trains between towns and cities. Rent a car to explore the national parks at your own pace or rent a bicycle to enjoy more rugged scenery.

From mountains to harbors, Canterbury is a scenic delight.
