The Capricorn Coast stretches across a section of jaw-dropping shoreline in Central Queensland, where heritage resort villages look out to a constellation of tropical islands. Dive, snorkel or sail your way around island reefs or make the journey to the treasures of the Southern Great Barrier Reef. With numerous laid-back seaside villages and 13 major beaches across 59 miles (95 kilometers) of coastline, the Capricorn Coast has plenty to offer visitors to its shores.
A good place to start your adventure on the Capricorn Coast is the region’s visitor center, located in the town of Yeppoon. With its charming waterfront esplanade, beach fashion boutiques and selection of cafés and restaurants, this major hub is a great introduction to the region. The town is near the renowned Capricorn Resort and directly overlooks the Keppel Island Group, a chain of breathtaking islands that are fringed with coral reefs.
Travel south from Yeppoon to reach Rosslyn Bay Harbour and join a diving, fishing or sightseeing trip to Great Keppel Island. You can also reach the island by ferry. Explore the island’s sandy beaches and bushwalking trails on a fun-filled daytrip or stay overnight in a scenic campsite to fill your days snorkeling through coral seascapes and discovering coastal lookouts. In winter, you might spot dolphins playing offshore. More magnificent islands can be seen on the journey sailing up to the Capricorn Coast’s northerly border, Stanage Bay.
Discover the Capricorn Coast’s southern section and the old-fashioned appeal of Emu Park. This heritage seaside resort has been on the map since the 19th century. See the resort’s Anzac memorial boardwalk and the Singing Ship, a sculpture that commemorates the exploratory efforts of Captain James Cook.
The Capricorn Coast can be reached by flying into Rockhampton’s major regional airport, which is 23.6 miles (38 kilometers) west of the coast. Rail, coach and major highways connect the Capricorn Coast’s villages and towns. With secret island coves, historic towns serving up fantastic fresh seafood and plenty of tropical sunshine, the Capricorn Coast is a destination for all seasons.
