Relax on the beach of this picturesque lake, swim and kayak in the calm water and follow hiking trails to viewpoints and a waterfall.

Cascade Lake is one of five freshwater lakes situated in Moran State Park, a 5,200-acre (2,100-hectare) park on Orcas Island. The lake’s beaches and swimmable water, hiking trails and fishing, kayaking and camping make it one of the island’s most popular destinations for outdoor pursuits.

An almost 3-mile (4.8-kilometer) trail offers an easy walk around the lake. The trail clings to the shoreline and has scenic views across the lake and the cliffs of Moran State Park. On a warm day, cool off with a swim in the clean water.

Continue along the Cascade Creek trail to a picturesque waterfall or, if you are feeling energetic, hike to the top of Mount Constitution. This 2,409-feet (734-meter) high mountain is the tallest point of the San Juan Islands.

Back at the lakeshore, relax on the beach and have lunch at the designated picnic areas. Alternatively, rent a kayak or paddleboat and make your way across to the lagoon where you can find a quiet spot to enjoy the surrounding scenery in peace.

Stay overnight at one of the lake’s three camping grounds. From the South End campground a trail leads to Sunrise Rock and an uninterrupted view over the lake. The Midway campground has a boat ramp, for those visiting with their own boat.

From April to October you can fish at the lake, which is home to largemouth bass and cutthroat, kokanee and rainbow trout. Cast off from the dock or the numerous rock outcroppings accessible via the lake’s hiking trail.

Cascade Lake is a 20-minute drive south from Eastsound and a 10-minute drive north from Olga. Travel by ferry from Anacortes to the Orcas Village ferry landing. From here, you can arrange a taxi or rent a car to reach the lake.

The lake and Moran State Park are open year round for day use and seasonally for camping. There is a charge for entering Moran State Park with a vehicle. Find further details on the park’s official website.
