Capture photos of the city’s iconic cathedral and impressive church and walk under the famous arch that remains from the old walls.

Cathedral Square is the main cultural hub and gathering point in the historic center of Cádiz. It contains some of the city’s most iconic structures, including the Cádiz Cathedral and the Arco de la Rosa. Spend an afternoon wandering around this large plaza for a greater understanding of the culture and heritage of Cádiz.

Gaze up at the impressive façade of the Cádiz Cathedral, which looms over the southern side of the square. Snap photos of the rococo touches of the frontage, which is flanked by palm trees. Climb up the set of steps and enter the church to see its spacious nave decorated with golden features. The steps in front of the religious structure are a popular meeting place for locals and tourists.

The church has a crypt that houses the remains of cultural icons of the city. Take a guided tour of the adjacent museum for a comprehensive understanding of the context and history of the cathedral.

On the western flank of the square is the Santiago Church, which has an intriguing oyster-shell construction. Step inside to see baroque altarpieces and a large image of St. Santiago on the upper level.

Beside a pink building with a restaurant on the eastern side of the square is the famous Arco de la Rosa, a preserved 13th-century arch that remains from the old medieval walls of Cádiz.

Relax at one of the cafés with tables spilling out into the plaza. Enjoy refreshing beverages and snacks while you watch people go by in this central square. The plaza contains several shops selling souvenirs and other items.

Cathedral Square marks the central point around which the historic center of Cádiz spreads. The charming city center is easy to access on foot. Make sure to see nearby sights, such as the Cathedral Museum, the Santa Cruz Parish and the Plaza Candelaria. Climb the steep ramp of the cathedral’s Torre de Poniente bell tower for views over the square, the city and the ocean.
