Come to explore the exterior and interior of the circular cathedral and enjoy the spectacular views of the surrounding city and coast.

La Spezia’s Catholic cathedral is a striking round gray-and-white structure. It’s located on a small hill on the edge of Old Town and stands out from the other religious buildings because of its stark modern style. Construction began on the project in the 1950s under the supervision of modernist architect Adalberto Libera, but the cathedral was not completed until the 1970s.

Venture inside the cathedral to see the spacious interior chamber. Take note of the circular shape of the room, which recalls how the people of God gathered around Christ. Notice the presence of 12 columns that support the vast dome these columns represent the 12 apostles, Jesus’ special followers, from the Bible.

Those with an interest in architecture will appreciate the unusual concept and vision of the building and those seeking a spiritual renewal will appreciate the solemnity inside. From the hilltop position, look down on the busy Piazza Europa and the boats coming and going at the harbor as well as spectacular vistas of the surrounding Gulf of La Spezia. Bring your camera to photograph the many interesting and attractive views from this site.

There are two access points to Cattedrale di Cristo Re. Enter on foot through Piazza Europa be aware that this route requires visitors to climb two flights of stairs. If arriving by car, pull up on Via dei Colli at the back of the cathedral. Remember to be respectful and quiet since this is a functioning place of worship. The cathedral, which is open daily, is located about a 20-minute walk from La Spezia Centrale train station.
