Enjoy a moment of solitude and reflection in this peaceful little 18th-century church, which sits near the waterfront in Scilla.

The small church of Chiesa dello Spirito Santo is often overlooked by visitors to Scilla in favor of the bigger and more eye-catching castle. If you do seek it out, however, you will be amply rewarded. Take some time to appreciate its peaceful, reverent atmosphere.

The church dates back to 1752. Unlike most other historical buildings in the town, the church has managed to remain mostly unscathed by the many earthquakes that have devastated the region over the centuries. Admire its white Baroque-style façade, which looks much the same as it would have appeared back when it was first built in 1752.

Venture inside to examine the church’s attractive interiors. Look for the carved walnut choir stalls, the imposing marble altar and sculptures and several paintings completed by local artists. Of particular note are the painting and statue of St.Francis ofPaola. The Calabrian-born St. Francis of Paola is revered for starting a religious order known as the Minim friars in the 15th century. The movement placed a great emphasis on the virtue of humility.

Find Chiesa dello Spirito Santo in the Marina Grande district of Scilla. The church is set in a small square below the nearby Castello Ruffo. The church has restricted hours and is typically open for only a few hours on Saturday evening and on Sundays. The church is free to enter. Consider attending a Mass on Sunday. Services are conducted in Italian and all residents and visitors to Scilla are welcome to attend. Remember that this church is still an active place of worship so be sure to dress modestly and remain quiet and respectful at all times.

After viewing the church, stroll around the pretty harbor and promenade area where you will find several restaurants serving delicious fresh fish and other classic Calabrian dishes.
