Visit a European-style church that enthralls with its impressive façade. The attractive parkland on its doorstep contains a striking statue of St.Peter.

The Church of St. Peter is San Pedro La Laguna’s principal place of worship for the town’s Catholic population. The building sits in an attractive park and its brilliant white façade is a stark contrast to the neighboring properties.

Appreciate the church’s architectural design details that include two crucifixes. One has been placed on the roof, while the other occupies a niche above the front door.

Study the large, colorful statue of St.Peter that’s only a few feet from the church. The engraving beneath his feet reads, "Tu eres Peter." These words translate as “You are Peter” and were supposedly how this apostle was informed by Jesus that he would be the foundation of a new religion. Indeed, Peter was the first pope. The statue is holding the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven, a symbolic reward for the good deeds Peter committed. At the feet of the sculpture is the figure of a rooster, the animal that was heard crowing on the night Peter denied Jesus.

Once inside the church, tour the main body of the building to see statues and the altar. Take some time out to enjoy the peace and quiet. Experience some more relaxing moments in the small park in front of the church that features a paved walkway with pergolas, benches, palm trees and neat patches of grass.

Visit toward the end of June for the annual festival that honors Peter, the town’s patron saint. The local population takes to the streets with flags and firecrackers for several days of processions and partying. The festival climaxes with the coronation of the queen of the town’s community. She is chosen for her spiritual beauty and knowledge of San Pedro La Laguna, among other criteria.

Bus services to San Pedro La Laguna run daily from Guatemala City, Antigua and Xela. There is a drop off point in the middle of town, a few footsteps from the Church of St. Peter. Otherwise, reach San Pedro by boat taxi from Panajachel.
