Join locals and visitors flocking to City Park (Varosliget) for its quiet green space or the surrounding cultural, dining and entertainment spots. The undeveloped area was established as one of the world’s first public parks in the early 1800s. It is large: 302 acres (122 hectares). The park’s main entrance is Heroes’ Square, which contains several structures built around 1900. See the Millennium Monument to reflect on Hungary’s history. Browse the Hall of Art’s contemporary pieces by local and international artists. If you prefer older works, visit the Museum of Fine Arts for antiquities and an excellent collection of works by Old Master European painters and sculptors.Farther into the park, soak in Budapest’s famous natural thermal baths at Széchenyi Baths, created 100 years ago. The modern spa treatment includes whirlpools, sauna, swimming pools and massage. The baths are open daily, with entrance and activity fees.Just a few minutes from the baths, visit Budapest’s zoo with 5,000 animals from 1,000 species. Families will enjoy hourly events of animal feeding, 3-D movies and demonstrations and mini-lectures. When you’re hungry, eat at one of the 10 dining spots within the zoo, which has an admission fee and is open every day except December 24 and 31.See the largest agricultural museum in Europe at the Vajdahunyad Castle. It was established temporarily for the Millennium and the building now displays different periods of Hungarian architecture. In the winter, the castle is the backdrop for Budapest’s large outdoor ice rink. Rent skates and glide across the ice. Petőfi Hall is a popular spot in the park for young adults. International pop and rock stars perform on its open stage for audiences of 6,000 people. To access City Park, take the subway, bus or trolley and get off at Heroes’ Square.
