Escape the tourist bustle of central Albufeira to relax, swim and snorkel at this beach of golden sand and unusual rock formations.

Coelha Beach (Praia da Coelha) epitomizes the glorious beach and coastal lifestyle of the Algarve. At Coelha Beach, the sand is fine, the water is warm and the scenery is stunning. Come here to top up your tan, cool off with a refreshing swim, explore craggy cliffs and spot colorful ocean life.

Access to the beach is via a scenic pathway framed by bamboo, carob and olive trees. It then cuts through an opening in a cliff before reaching a wooden staircase. Walk down the steps to be greeted by a picture-perfect cove and the glistening water of the Atlantic Ocean. Large boulders lay scattered along the shoreline and tall cliffs protect the beach from strong winds.

Crowds gather around the entrance to the beach, where there is a restaurant that serves light snacks and seafood dishes. Sun loungers and umbrellas are available for rent in this area. Walk toward the western side of the cove to find a quieter spot. When the tide is up it’s possible to paddle around a headland to Praia da Maré das Porcas where you can walk or swim through a natural rock-cut tunnel.

The sea is calm and pleasant for swimming, although you should be aware of the pebbly seabed when entering. There’s plenty of sea life to see so bring snorkeling equipment if you have it. Children will enjoy searching for and collecting the shells that wash up on the shore.

For some adventure, follow the dirt trails from the back of the beach and up onto the cliffs. Pay attention to the warning signs and keep a safe distance from the edge. Do this in the evening to witness the sunset along the Algarve coastline.

The beach is located 4.4 miles (7 kilometers) west of Albufeira. There’s a car park at the beginning of the pathway.

Coelha Beach is busiest during the summer months, when there are lifeguards on patrol. Arrive in the winter months to find an often deserted bay.
