Colonia del Sacramento Plaza Mayor is the main part of the city’s historic center. Look for several landmarks around the plaza, such as the Museo Municipal and the Portuguese Museum. Take advantage of this ideal spot to relax on a bench with a picnic among the trees and bushes of the square. The plaza has been the spacious center of the city since its inception in the 17th century with the arrival of Portuguese settlers.
Above the trees of the square, see the top of the Colonia del Sacramento Lighthouse and the large Uruguayan flag alongside it. You can find the Portuguese Museum and the Museo Municipal next to the plaza. Purchase a ticket that gives you access to several attractions around the square.
Take a leisurely stroll through the cobblestone streets around Plaza Mayor that date back to the Portuguese settlement in 1680. Eat international cuisine at one of the restaurants scattered around the square and its adjoining avenues. Enjoy a coffee at a cafés as you watch locals and tourists pass through this popular spot.

Initial settlers used the square in the 17th and 18th centuries to plan military strategies and hold important ceremonies. It was also used to punish and execute prisoners during the Uruguayan Civil War.
Colonia del Sacramento Plaza Mayor is less than 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) west of the city’s central bus stop and the terminal for the ferry that takes passengers to and from Buenos Aires in Argentina. It is surrounded by many of the city’s most recognizable icons, such as the Street of Sighs and the lighthouse. Enjoy traveling around this charming part of the city very easily on foot.
