Go camping near mangroves, bird-watching beneath a thick canopy or kayaking between the islands of this scenic state park in the Middle Keys.

Find yourself surrounded by mangrove swamps, thick tropical canopies and a variety of local wildlife as you explore Curry Hammock State Park. Spend a few days camping within the park and bask in the Florida sun on one of its many beaches.

Curry Hammock State Park is made up of a series of islands in the Middle Keys. Due to the range of outdoor activities that suit children as well as adults, this is a great family destination. The calm water suits all levels of swimmers and picnic shelters provide a reprieve from the sun.

Bring some fish to broil on the barbecues provided or try your hand at fishing from the bank of the lagoon. Watch windsurfers skimming across the sea or rent a board for yourself to get a workout.

Because there is a small fee to enter Curry Hammock State Park, there are fewer crowds than at many of the other keys. This means you can still find quiet beaches to set up camp away from the sounds of motorboats and large groups of revelers. Rent a kayak to explore the island’s shore or dive the nearby coral reefs.

Various trails twist through the mangrove swamps of the park. The thick hardwood vegetation, called the hammock, means that much of the park is in shade. Follow the main walking trail to reach a large lagoon. Keep an eye out for lizards and birds as you walk. Sometimes you can catch glimpses of schools of barracuda in the lagoon. Bring your binoculars to spot migratory birds such as hawks and other birds of prey.

Visit the Florida State Parks website to make a reservation for overnight stays. Camping facilities include warm showers, toilets and a camp host. In winter, the host organizes regular campfire gatherings on the beach and live music performances.

Curry Hammock State Park is located near mile marker 56 on the Overseas Highway, just a 10-minute drive from downtown Marathon. Parking is available within the park. The park is open daily, and an admission fee applies.
