Much of the land surrounding the Rhine, Meuse and Scheldt rivers was below sea level and existing dikes did not provide adequate protection. During a storm surge, the rising waters of the North Sea flooded Zeeland, killing over 1,800 people and decimating farmland.

The spot is not all engineering and technical feats, however. Deltapark also features seals and sea lions. These species were once populous in the area. Now that the works are complete their numbers are steadily increasing again. Take a boat ride from the park for a chance to spot some of the creatures in the wild. For a guaranteed close-up sighting it’s best to go to one of the seal shows that run several times daily.
Learn about the sharks and other marine creatures endemic to the area at the Aquarium. Thrill seekers can even go swimming with the sharks. Measure yourself next to a whale’s baleen to get a sense of the scale of the gentle giants of the North Sea.
