RELAXING GETAWAY DESTINATION

This vintage bungalow is bright and welcoming. Inside, enjoy the charm of natural wood floors, century-old woodwork and high ceilings. Four bedrooms (great beds!), two baths, and a fully-equipped kitchen provide a sense of home and comfort for your family and friends. Outside, the screened-in front porch is a pleasant space to relax, and the back yard fire pit invites everyone to gather for memorable evenings. The large, park-like property has many mature trees, and guests often see deer, turkeys and other wildlife.

The Rock River is the centerpiece of Dixon, the hub of its history and a major attraction for visitors. The city’s downtown district is within walking distance of the house and has the distinction of being listed on the National Historic Register because of its architecture. You can eat out, shop and, if your timing is right, enjoy one of several annual city festivals.

The many options for outdoor recreation include boating, canoeing, kayaking, and water skiing on the river, or hiking, biking, horseback riding, and jogging on park trails. Lowell Park (200 acres) offers scenic drives, trails, a dedicated natural area and nature center, picnic shelters, playgrounds, and boat access. Meadows Park is a 567-acre open space along the Rock River that includes hiking trails and sports fields. Also worth your time and attention are three nearby state parks: Lowden State Park, Castle Rock State Park, and White Pines Forest State Park.

You’re sure to note both the pride Dixon takes in its history and its contemporary energy. The King family has had its own place in Dixon history ever since the house and farm were given to the owner’s grandparents as a wedding gift in 1915. And as a guest in the homestead, you’ll contribute to its ongoing vitality. We know you’ll enjoy your stay, and we hope you’ll want to return often.

Great Place to Enjoy Nature
Very nice and well stocked home with a huge yard to enjoy with our dog and appreciate nature. We saw deer several times each day along with all sorts of birds and other wildlife. Convenient location in town as well.

Perfect Rustic Respite
My family rented the King Estate Manor for a long weekend and found it to be a perfect spot for meeting up, breaking bread and getting a good night’s rest in between the busy-ness of wedding festivities. The home is definitely “rustic” but very clean and comfortable. Two downstairs bedrooms and bath were perfect for our elderly parents; while the upstairs bedrooms and bath were perfect for us more limber adults. We all agreed that the best room in the house was the quaint screened-in porch with wildlife sightings galore! Watching my 80-yr old father’s eyes light up with each deer sighting was priceless! Bottom line: The house was established in 1912 so it is quirky with old-school charm. With that said, our stay couldn’t have been more perfect. Thank you!

perfect for the whole family
we were in town for a wedding and had enough room for everyone, lots of deer in the early mornings. a older house and little rough around the edges but clean. landscaping could have been kept up a little better, but could have been the time of year fall and leaves and spiders/buggy, but over all a good stay.

Beautiful backyard
This was not the fanciest house we have ever rented but the huge backyard made the stay great. Beautiful trees and very secluded yet close to town. We spent the whole weekend around the firepit. We all slept comfortably in simple but very clean bedrooms. The whole house was very clean. The only downside was the very small kitchen but we cooked on the Weber grill so no big deal. Great Labor day weekend.

Great Getaway
My only regret was not staying on the property more. We were greeted by an 8-point buck, two young bucks and a doe upon our arrival. Perfect bonfire setting. The back yard is way prettier than the photo. A bundle of wood and charcoal were left for our convenience. When we went inside the house, I was surprised we had to make all of our own beds. Bedding was laid in a bundle on the corner of each bed. The old house quirks were a bit challenging at times, like forced air to the upper level (bring a fan), tiny awkward kitchen, and the toilet parked right in front of one of the door ways of the jack and jill bathroom downstairs. None of that would keep me from returning though. It was a very homey, cozy accommodation. We were two families with 4 teenage boys. All the boys stayed upstairs with their own bathroom, while the parents had their own getaway downstairs. It was perfect.

Great to be back Home!
We truly enjoyed seeing all The updated changes in Dixon and loved the secluded , wooded property and location of the house. The wildlife was pretty spectacular . We were lucky to find a pet friendly rental as well. Enjoyed the history of the family farm house and hope this house gets the necessary updates required for an older home especially to the upstairs to cont to make it one of the desirable VRBO’s in Dixon. The house in the woods
Grand old farmhouse, clean, host was great. Could use a better entrance stairway with handrails. If you like tall vegetation this is the place. Short ceiling in some places upstairs. All this said the house is a good bang for your buck!

Wonderful time in Dixon!
We had so much fun on the property and exploring the surrounding area. The farmhouse is so comfortable and home-y. and the surrounding acreage...wow, what an escape from the city! We also went for many hikes in the state parks and big bike rides on the rail trail. What a great vacation!

Family getaway
Nice older home with a nice wooded property. We took our boys 14, 12, and 8 on a mini spring break getaway. The home has a lot of doors and rooms to explore for younger kids. The woods have plenty of area to roam around and see families of deer. The deer were very active early in the more in hand the evening. We did find a deceased partially eaten deer in the forested area so be careful with smaller dogs. The kids thought it is pretty cool and understand it’s part of nature. There are plenty of trails and wooded area and the rock river to explore nearby too.

Sweet home with lots of outdoor space
We really enjoyed our stay in Dixon, IL! Found the Homestead to be a great place for the 6 of us- 1 child, 5 adults- plenty of space inside and outside. We took advantage of the HUGE backyard and the walking paths. The living room and dining room were our main spaces, but also taking time alone in a bedroom was easy. As it's an older building, the central heat wasn't consistent, but it also didn't leave us freezing. I recommend that you stock up for the kitchen, we ended up at Walmart (10 min drive) to get things like tin foil, storage bags, additional cooking pans, etc. It snowed a few inches overnight while we were there and the plow came out the next day, just had to shovel the stairs and a path to the car. We went into town twice and found multiple coffee shops and a bookstore- it's worth walking around and supporting local businesses!

Inaccurate listing and short refund
I booked a four night stay for late October. Right after we arrived we discovered that the TV in the living room had no cable as advertised, a useless over-the-air antenna, and a non-working remote control. The TV in the bedroom had nothing at all. I called the owner's phone, but got a v/m in his office as it was late in the afternoon. As such, we had no TV the first night. He called back the next day to say he'd send someone out to get it fixed. A local maintenance man showed up about an hour later with a larger over-the-air antenna and a replacement TV. No matter where he and I placed the new antenna, ever outside on the porch, we couldn't get any MSM network stations at all. The only one we got was a Fox affiliate out of Rockford. The new TV had a badly cracked screen right out of the box, but without programming it would have been useless anyway. At that point it was clear there was no short-term remedy for the lack of TV programming, so I called the owner back. He agreed there was no short-term remedy, so I told him we'd be heading home to MI ASAP. He agreed to make the financials right by us. The day after we returned home, I emailed the owner to request a full refund less the cleaning fee which I felt we owned him. His first response was to say his listing on Airbnb did not claim cable was included. I quickly told him I didn't use Airbnb. I used VRBO, and it clearly said (at the time) the rental offered TV and cable. He acknowledged that fact in writing (and quickly removed the cable feature from the VRBO listing). His next parry was to direct my attention to paragraph 20 in his rental agreement. I looked into that and said paragraph referred only to Internet reliability. It had nothing to do with TV or cable. His final offer was to refund only three nights rental, not the first night and not any of the fees. He refused to offer the full refund I was expecting from our final phone conversation at the property. Know well what you're getting with this rental property. We expected a working TV and cable as advertised. We got neither. We also expected a full refund. Didn't get that either. So "buyer beware."

Great for family with pets
Very comfortable and quaint - a terrific "family reunion" destination. Plenty of room . Nicely updated bath on main floor. Screened porch and big rambling backyard with firewood ready. Walkable (about a mile) to the Rock River riverwalk park and also park trails. You can easily plan paddling and biking trips in the surrouding area. You would never know that pets had been previous visitors, and we were glad to find such a convenient spot where we could have ours with us! Owner is highly responsive and welcoming. Thanks for everything!
