"This cottage is actually newly built, very clean, modern design and well-stocked. I found it to be a great location to visit many places in the Basque region ranging from coast to city to mountains. It was nice not to have to drive out and back in to a city every day. I would stay here again. "

"For anybody thinking that this will be a 'charming' rustic experience - please reconsider! We were unable to stay here - the place was musty and dark with poor cooking facilities and a layout that didnt work for us - the terrace was unusable due to mosquitoes and we couldnt open windows to air it out for same reason. We are used to camping and would prefer a tent to this accommodation. At 200 Euros a night it is hardly BUDGET - and fell well below our expectations. We didnt even last 15 minutes...

"The trip to Villa Embil was absolutely amazing. We were welcomed by our host and received lots of places of interest and restaurants from him. Villa was gorgeous, clean and the views of Bay of Biscayne and Mediterranean were beautiful."

"We spent a lovely four nights here. The condo was on an upper floor, with plenty of parking at the side of the building. We used supermarkets in Durango (5-10 min drive away) for groceries. It was easy to drive into Durango and take the train to Bilbao for the day too. The kitchen had the basic things you might need (small oven, microwave, fridge-freezer, coffee machine, washer, dishwasher, but no kettle?) and the shower was pleasingly powerful. The air con was very welcome in the sticky July...

The fact that almost each bedroom had its own bathroom was amazing for our group. We spent the night exploring the adorable town and made easy day trips to San Sebastián and Bilbao. A wonderful base to get to know the Basque nature and culture. Anne and Kerman are very hospitable and were always available if necessary. "Ideal from our point of view: sparkling clean with all the equipment needed (except for tea mugs). The beds were comfortable and.the shower spacious and with a good water flow. Transmission of the Vuelta and.rugby world cup cut down on the time left to make the most of a well-stocked library. We met our host briefly at the beginning of the stay. He could not have been more charming and helpful."

A Top class Property

"Hotel IJ is a gem of a property deep in Basque country. Set in a gorgeous rural environment atop a small village and surrounded by hills and farms, it is the perfect country getaway. The building is as stunning as the photographs and the rooms have an elegant\ vintage charm to them. Regarding food, breakfast was our favourite meal with dinners at the cafe being little underwhelming. We never got a chance to try the fine dining option. All the staff was very friendly and helpful. I want to put a special mention and appreciation for some front desk staff members who went above and beyond to assist me with a concern with my car rental. I was treated unprofessionally by Avis with a car breakdown but the staff helped me with the language barrier and service concern in a foreign country and I really want to thank them for that and look forward to visiting again. "

"This is an absolute gem of an hotel. The building and decoration is stunning. Our room had the most incredible floor to ceiling window with sea views. It was spacious and beautifully designed. All staff were friendly and helpful. The breakfast was great. The location is fantastic. One of the best places I've ever stayed."
