The Enkoji Temple is a charming spiritual haven in the heart of Matsuyama. Standing behind a set of gates on a lively central block, the temple is fronted by an impressive stone monument. Enjoy the quiet within these stone walls, taking you away from the fast pace and raucous sound of the city center.
Appreciate the elegant architectural design of the temple, with its whitewashed front and dark wooden features. Decorating the underside of the awning beneath its gabled roof are lanterns, a clock and a large bell. Inspect the various plaques and inscriptions in traditional symbols.
The highlight is a vertical rectangular stone monument with Japanese lettering running down its length. At the entrance look for the blackboard providing a different philosophical insight every day.
The temple is an ideal sightseeing attraction for the whole family. Let your kids play on the colorful slide and climbing frame in the garden, while you relax on a wooden bench. You can also sit comfortably at a table and appreciate this tranquil space.
With its leafy surroundings, this site is as much a park providing relief from the city center’s shopping arcades as it is a temple. Admire the array of exotic plants decorating the temple’s exterior and shielding it from neighboring structures. Take shelter from the heat in the shade of an umbrella and breathe in the sweet aroma of devilwood flowers.
Note that the temple has a rich and intriguing history, having played a role in the early development and administration of the city.
