Learn about Hungary’s musical lineage, take in a classical performance and relax at a charming café in this picturesque open-air plaza.

Named after a famous Hungarian composer, Ferenc Liszt Square is a small plaza lined by restaurants, cafés and historic buildings. Stop for a break on a park bench to admire the monument at the center of the square. Take a romantic stroll after dinner around this vibrant plaza for a sense of the local culture.

The central part of the square is pedestrianized and makes for a quiet spot to people-watch. Relax with a book in the shade of a tree in summer. Enjoy a meal or hot drink at one of the cafés’ outdoor seating areas that spill on to the square. Admire the flowers growing between the trees.

Given its namesake, it’s not surprising the square is a hub for musicians. Ferenc Liszt Square is home to a majestic concert hall and the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music stands on its corner. Marvel at the intricate design of the large art nouveau building and consider its role in Hungary’s musical history since its foundation in 1875. Leaf through books and manuscripts donated by talented musicians.

In the center of the square stands a bronze statue of Ferenc Liszt. Snap a photograph of the statue, which captures the composer in a lively state. Visit the tourist information center in the plaza to find out about events and activities taking place during your stay.

Venture down one of the quaint alleys that lead from the spacious plaza. Visit the theaters, clubs and restaurants of Nagymezö Street, which is known as Budapest’s Broadway. Peruse an exhibit at the Mai Manó Ház House of Photography and visit the high-end boutiques on Andrassy Avenue and Király Street.

Ferenc Liszt Square is is open at all times and is free to enter. Find the square just off Andrassy Avenue in the central part of Budapest, making it an ideal gathering point to meet friends.

Take the Millennium Underground subway to Oktogon and walk southwest for two blocks. Alternatively, arrive by bus at one of the several stops in the area. Nearby attractions include the Radnóti Miklós Színház Theater and the Ernst Múzeum Budapest.
