The glamour of the 1930s comes alive in a restored movie palace that’s now a popular downtown arts venue.

During your stay in Tucson watch a play, ballet, musical, movie or concert at one of the city’s most beautiful performance venues. The Fox Tucson Theatre is a 1,200-seat restored movie palace that hosts a diverse roster of artistic, cultural and community-based activities.

The building first opened its doors in 1930. For nearly 40 years it was a major entertainment hub in the city. Dwindling audiences brought about its closure in 1974 and it fell into disrepair. However, following a six-year renovation project the theater reopened in 2005.

Pick your tickets up from the re-creation of the 1930s ticket booth. On your way inside note the decorative ceramic tiles at the entrance. Many are from the original theater construction in 1929.

Before watching the performance, take some time to inspect the building’s decor. The style was originally described as “Spanish modernistic” by newspapers, and is now known as Southwestern art deco, featuring art deco, Egyptian, Mayan and Native American-inspired decorations. Look at the lobby walls that have been repainted in their original colors and admire the attractive patterns on the original terrazzo floor.

Observe the art deco patterns on your seat’s fabric. When restorations began there were only black-and-white pictures of the seating so the actual colors were unknown. Fortunately, some of the original fabric was found in a back room and then replicated to restore the seats to their 1930s appearance.

From your place in the auditorium stare up at the large art deco chandelier and elaborate ceiling mural that have been restored to pristine conditions. Then sit back and enjoy the show.

The theater is open year-round. For a list of upcoming performances, visit the venue’s official website.

Make your way to the downtown theater district to watch a show at Fox Tucson Theatre, surrounded by the glamour of a bygone age. You’ll find metered parking in the streets around the theater and two parking garages within walking distance. Regular buses serve the area.
