Walk or cycle around this expansive park to see the glistening lake, pay your respects at the war memorials and enjoy a great view of the city.

General San Martin Park is a peaceful expanse of lakes and grassy lawns near the center of Mendoza. Explore a network of walking and cycling paths that lead to a number of city attractions, including a zoo, a football stadium and a scenic lookout onto the city. Spend an afternoon here with the family and enjoy one of the city’s quiet delights.

Construction of General San Martin Park began in 1896. It is named after the General who successfully led Argentina in the struggle for independence against the Spanish. Delight in its manicured landscapes inspired by the style of 19th-century English and French parks.

As you arrive at the park entrance, admire its majestic gates. Look out for the iconic golden condor that stands guard atop the framework, alongside the city coat of arms.

The park is accessible by car but is best explored on foot or by bicycle. Its 970-acre (400-hectare) grounds are crisscrossed with roads and walking paths. It is recommended to get a park map, as the routes are not well signposted.

Walk around the lake and spot some of the 34 sculptures that decorate the grounds. Enjoy a moment of quiet reflection at the war memorials, including the Cerro de la Gloria (Monument to the Army of the Andes), a soaring construction of iron sculptures on Argentinian stone.

Take a stroll through the El Rosedal (rose garden) and admire the flower displays. Paths leading to the top of the park’s hill offer scenic views of the city below.

Find a variety of local species at the park’s zoo, situated in the northwest corner. As evening approaches, head back to Club Mendoza de Regatas, where you can enjoy a drink as the sun sets over the lake.

General San Martin Park can be reached on foot from most areas of Mendoza’s downtown. Alternatively, get there by bus or taxi. Entry to the park is free, but the zoo charges an admission fee.
