Our extended family of 20 people enjoyed Thanksgiving week at Spotswood Lodge. The expansive first floor offered plenty of space to spread out, and the cottage next store provided a quiet retreat from the bustle. Some of the room configurations could be interesting (like the two-twin bedroom that could only be reached by going through the three-twin bedroom), but the mattresses were of great quality and there were plenty of bathrooms.
The grounds were interesting, though unseasonably cold weather kept us mostly inside. We enjoyed easy access to sites like James Madison's Montpelier estate, marked historic walking trails (such as the Battle of the WIlderness Civil War battlefield), and quick trips into Gordonsville. Charlottesville was just 25 minutes away.
Complaints? Not many. The WiFi was dodgy, despite the owner's several valiant attempts to fix it. And because cell reception there is almost non-existent, it could be tough sledding if you have work to do (like I did!). Thankfully, I found I could get mobile data on Verizon if I sat on the right side of the bed in the cottage loft--just enough to get by!
Would I recommend? Absolutely. I was especially impressed at how responsive the owner was when we called with questions or problems--even right before Thanksgiving day.
