Sway from side to side on this iconic rickety structure that holds an important place in the local collective memory.

The Swinging Bridge is among the most fun and popular attractions in Hanapepe. Dating back to the early 1900s, this shabby structure still rocks back and forth with the wind and provides a thrilling river crossing. See if your kids are brave enough to cross this shaky and bouncy suspension bridge.

Stand in the center of the bridge and take photos of the Hanapepe River and its surrounding green banks. Stay for the sunset for the best views of the picturesque scenery, as the sky turns crimson. Kids often enjoy swinging and bouncing on the bridge. It was initially built at the beginning of the 20th century and reconstructed 4 years after the 1992 Hurricane Iniki damaged much of Hawaii.

Note that when the bridge was inaccessible due to heavy rain storms, school was usually canceled for the village kids. It is now safer and less shaky than it was previous to the infamous hurricane. Chat with locals and tour guides about their memories of the initial bridge. See the structure at night, when its lights emit a romantic glow that is reflected in the river.

Cross the bridge to reach the northwestern side, where you will find the residential area of Hanapepe Valley. To respect local privacy, turn back upon arrival. Wander through the quaint streets of the southeastern flank for its art galleries, book stores and shopping options.

The bridge has no admission fees and remains open at all times for locals and vacationers to enjoy.

The Swinging Bridge is on the island of Kauai in the northwestern section of the Hawaiian archipelago. Find the bridge just south of Hanapepe Valley and the Hiloa Stream in the center of Hanapepe. Visit nearby attractions, such as the Kauai Soto Zen Temple Zenshuji and the Hanapepe Stadium.
