Badenstedt is a modern suburb set on the western side of Hannover, beside the open fields and farmlands of Germany’s Lower Saxony region. A small stream runs along its northern boundary with Davenstedt, another Hannover neighborhood.
Begin your visit in the central area of Market Square. This is the heart of Badenstedt, where most of the suburb’s shops can be found. Look around to spot an odd little fountain with a large stone frog spurting out the water. Take a seat on the terrace of the popular Eiscafé Degrassi and try one of their indulgent ice creams as you mingle with the locals.
Stretch your legs by taking a gentle stroll along the pathways that run through the parklands that hug the banks of the little Fösse stream. Trees and birdlife make for a tranquil atmosphere. The paths lead to open farmland, giving you a glimpse of rural life in Germany. Along the way, you can spot the locals tend to their crops and flowers at Körtingsdorf, a community garden.
See the locals get all excited during a game of “fussball” (soccer) at the Turnverein Badenstedt sports ground. Check the local events calendar if you’d like to catch a game during your stay. The on-site clubhouse offers meals.
Don’t miss one of the most colorful buildings in Badenstedt, the Sri Muthumariamman Temple. This ornate Hindu temple, built in 1995, contains some fascinating shrines. Even if you don’t go in, it’s worth seeing the highly detailed carvings on its exterior.
Head back to the center of Badenstedt for a bite to eat. Several bakeries offer tempting sweet and savory treats, the Raute Bäckerei Konditorei und Café being a local favorite, while restaurants serve both local and international meals.
Easily reached from central Hannover by tram or car, quiet little Badenstedt has some interesting spots to visit if you want to experience everyday life in Germany.
