Climb to the top of the tallest and oldest lighthouse in Cape Cod for stellar views of the rugged Atlantic coastline.

Highland Lighthouse, also known as the Cape Cod Light, has long looked out over the Atlantic Ocean. Discover more about the maritime heritage of Cape Cod and delight in the impressive vistas from the top of this tall lighthouse.

A lighthouse was first erected on this site in 1797, though nothing of the original remains. It was replaced in 1831 and again in 1857. Look for this lighthouse today, still standing over 150 years after construction. Although the structure is the same, it is no longer in its original position in the 1990s it was moved away from the sea to protect it from erosion.

Before you enter, take a moment to inspect the 66-foot-tall (20-meter) tower from the outside. It soars over the surrounding landscape and is attached to a smaller gray building. The classic lighthouse design and height make it a landmark in the region.

Inside the lighthouse gain a new perspective on Cape Cod. Take a tour with a lighthouse volunteer and climb to the top to see impressive views. Be careful when climbing the 69 steps, as they can be hard to navigate due to their size and steep incline. The view from the platform is well worth the climb.

If you are fortunate to have good weather conditions during your visit, the ocean views will extend up to 20 miles (32 kilometers). Look down upon the nearby beach and golf course. Be sure to watch the short video on the lighthouse, which will reveal more details about the structure.

Pick up a souvenir from the Highland Light Museum during the lighthouse’s open season or go to the Highland House Museum, which is located next to the lighthouse. Explore its exhibits and learn about the history of the Truro area’s Native American and European inhabitants.

Highland Lighthouse charges an admission fee and is open every day from mid-May to mid-October. Visitors must be over 48 inches (1.2 meters) to go up the tower. There are no set times for tours. Drive to Highland Lighthouse in 5 minutes from central North Truro. Parking is available.
