Enjoy classical music, a rock concert or performing arts event in this impressive century-old venue on the University of Michigan campus.

Opened in 1913, Hill Auditorium is a magnificent performing arts center, popular not only among University of Michigan students, but also Ann Arbor residents and global visitors. Reserve seats for events including philharmonic orchestra concerts, dance productions, lectures, rock shows, folk festivals, touring Broadway shows and some free activities.

The theater seats more than 3,500 guests, providing excellent acoustics across the main floor, mezzanine and balcony areas. Notice how the hemispherical stage creates a sense of intimacy between performers and audience members. Eminent Detroit architect firm Albert Kahnand Associates designed the building over 100 years ago and also completed the 2004 renovation. Today’s hall has a pleasant mix of classic design and modern amenities.

View the online documentary A Space for Music, A Seat for Everyone on the Hill Auditorium website to learn about the venue’s history. See clips of noted performances over its more than 100 years of existence, which illustrate the changing music scene in the United States. Ella Fitzgerald appeared in 1942, 1965 and 1979. Janice Joplin in 1969 and Cheech and Chong in 1972 paved the way for Bob Dylan in the ’80s, Prince in 1982, Bruce Springsteen in the ‘90s, Ludacris in 2005 and Mac DeMarco in 2017. Hillary Clinton spoke to a sold-out crowd in Hill Auditorium during her 2017 book promotion tour. Award-winning homegrown University of Michigan dance groups, glee clubs and choirs also perform on the grand stage.
